Hi,

To generate sidespin and backspin you need to have the bat at th eright angle.  Contact the ball underneath and on the side slightly.  If you look at th eball as a clockface from side on, hit the ball at aroung 4 or 5 o'clock.

The best thing to start with is to get away from the table and try to make the ball curve on the floor.  When you can do this you can then see if you can make it come back towards you as well.  You can then combie these two ideas and you will generate backspin and sidespin.  The it is time to get closer to the table and give it a go. Initially don't even try to serve on the table, just get th eright contact.  Slowly you will be able to get it closer to looking like a serve.

PingSkills has just released a DVD called "Serving Secrets Revealed", on this very subject.  It is in an easy to understand format with plenty of demonstrations.  You can purchase this on our website store.

Practice on the floor first and let me know how it goes.
