Serving with tacky rubber

Serving

My rubber is a Chinese rubber. For a while ive been serving mostly side spin with a bit of back spin because I never successfully served a heavy underspin serve.

Even when I get under the ball and I get what feels to me like a great brushing action little backspin is created

(I can get a lot of backspin if I tilt the bat angle really back but that makes the ball go either really high or far in order to achieve a lot of spin) any tips of serving mechanics that might be a bit different when using this kind of rubber

Thanks for reading this and for teaching me how to become a better player :)

Hi David.

It sounds like you have the right action.  Now just focus on getting the contact closer to the end of the racket, the part furthest away from the handle.  This applies to whatever type of rubber you are using.  This part of the bat is moving the fastest so potentially will get you the best spin.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
