This is about the type of contact you make with the ball. By brushing across the ball you get sidespin. So then if you brush across and down on an angle you will get sidespin and backspin. If you go across and up you will get topspin.
Take a look at the video on Learning To Spin which covers this area as well. I often find that thinking about the path of the ball that you are looking for will help you to get the contact right.
