I think the secret is 10 years of practice :)

Seriously though, the key to his success was the variation and deception he was able to achieve. This was certainly helped by the fact you could hide the ball legally for most of his career. He was especially good at the pendulum serve.

So if you want to emulate the great Waldner, start by learning the basic pendulum serve and then start to add more and more variations of spin, speed, and placement.
