Hi my strokes are good but my serves are not. What serve would you suggest for a spin type of play.

Hi Ryhs,

The key to improving your serve is to be able to generate a lot of spin. Start by practicing away from the table. To get a lot of spin you need to have a fast brushing contact. Just hit the ball and try and get it to curve in the air. Once you are confident and getting a lot of spin then come to the table and try to do a spinny serve.

The pendulum serve is a great to serve to learn especially if you enjoy looping. You can serve this from your backhand side and this opens up the court for you to play a forehand.

I would recommend purchasing our Serving Secrets Revealed DVD as we cover a range of serves including the pendulum, reverse pendulum, tomahawk, backhand and high toss. We also talk about improving your serve with variations of spin, speed and placement.

Good luck with your serves, let me know how you get on.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
