Hey Guys,

In what situation will you use the Japanese Penhold Grip Stroke??? (The one that mimics a sword drawing attack like samurais... ^^)

I'm not sure if it's for attack or defense, and I'm not sure if it can be played farther or in a different position...

Hehe..

Hi Jin,

You can use the Japanese penhold grip for all of your attacking strokes.  This is a grip that has been used successfully at the very highest level.

It is more difficult to play the backhand with this grip but it is adaptable.

It is difficult to use the penhold grip for away from the table defensive strokes.  It has been used at a high level but it is not very common.  It is easier to use the shakehand grip for defensive play.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
