Does going out for a run around your street help you play better or does it have no effect?

It can help. I think it is important to try and get a balanced approach to your Strength & Conditioning. Just going for a run won’t help to much but if you do it as part of a planned routine then it will certainly help.
A key tactic in Table Tennis is to serve short, get a long return and then attack the third ball with a topspin stroke. It's important in matches to make sure you can make that third ball consistently on the table so you can maintain the pressure on your opponent.
