Hi Alois,

I came to hear about a reverse backhand serve. I have never seen or heard about this serve before and was wondering what is it. On YouTube I found a video of Ma Long doing this serve: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKJDrydfl-0

It seems he is contacting the ball from the other side of this bat while doing a normal backhand serve action. Could you explain its advantages and how to learn it.

Hi Abhinav,

It is an interesting serve.  I have seen a few players use it but not for a while.  You are right he is contacting the ball with the forehand side of his racket.  You also have to turn your body more side on to get the ball to go in the direction that you want it to.

Thanks Alois. What are the advantages of this serve except the deception? I mean the reverse pendulum serve has a lot of variations in terms of side spin, backspin and topspin, but here it looks like the serve will mostly have little amount of topspin and side spin and looks like a difficult serve to control from going long as well, is that correct?

I think its greatest advantage is surprise.  However, nobody has ever really developed this serve to any level.

Tried to do it but seems too complicated at the moment. May be you could make a video about how to do it :)
