Hi,

We haven't made the DVD on Returning Serve as yet.  Hopefully that will be produced in the second half of this year.  Keep watching out  for it.

Returning Short Topspin Serves: Two Options

Returning a short topspin serve can be tricky because the spin wants to lift the ball up. In this video, we look at two effective options: developing an attacking flick and learning how to push the ball safely.

For the flick, the key is to be positive. Take a few risks, hit through the ball a little harder, and aim for a fast, flat contact. In practice, don’t worry too much about making mistakes as this is how you learn to control the shot under pressure.

The second option is the push. You can push a short topspin serve, but you need to adjust your contact. Instead of getting under the ball, come down the back of it more, almost feeling like your bat is moving slightly backwards. This helps counter the topspin and keeps the return lower and more controlled.

as a beginners guide watch where your server contacts the ball. if they slice under the ball you can slice under it to stop it going down into the net. if they slice the left side of ball try to gently slice the same side of the ball they did. this stops their sidespin pinging off your bat sideways. if their arm sweeps upwards they are applying topspin so just strike over the top of the ball to stop it pinging upwards off your bat giving them an easy smash.  Basically you mirror their contact on the ball wherever they slice it.  Good luck.

I'll have to be extra good this year and maybe I'll find the Return of Serve DVD under the Christmas tree this year....  :o)

Hi I too am fairly new at table tennis. I struggle with returning serves also, especially topsin. The ball bounces high and loopy of my bat sometimes even clearing the opponents table. I now do a kind of block shot, I let his ball bounce of my dead bat using a closed face backhand. It seems to work but there's not much conviction or attacking the ball with this. I'm exited about getting my new stiga carbopro. I also got some cheap sunflex rubbers to replace the peeling rubber on my old cheap bought pre-made bat. I can't blame the equipment now!
