Hello Alois, hello Jeff,

Question about top spin return of a long tomahawk serve. I just can't keep the ball on the table with straight topspin. It goes sideways and off the table because of the sidespin and are sometimes also to long. But a hooking bh or inside out fh works quite well. Is this the right answer or should I believe in the straight topspin technique and just wait until my technique gets better?

Hi Marcin,

I think you can do both.  To get the straight topspin shot though, you need to relax your wrist and allow it to adjust to the angle that is required to counteract the sidespin.  I often find that the tight wrist will allow the spin to take effect.  The relaxed wrist will allow a faster brushing action and also the correct angle.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
