Returning half long serve

Coach Alois

I have my next tournament coming up and the pesky juniors from San Francisco area often serve half long.  They want me to return deep so they can attack.

It is hard for me to return a half long serve short as it is a longer serve that is also not very slow.  If their serve goes long I will attack but any suggestions when it is not long are appreciated.

Maybe a hard push to their backhand, or try a hard angle to either side or maybe I should hit it early and go for an aggressive shot right away?  or try all of these and see if any work against each opponent?

thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

You have some good solutions yourself.  If you are not winning many points against their serve anyway, then try all of these things and take some risks.  Often if you take a risk early and put some pressure on their serve their half long serves will start to break down.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
