Hey pingskills. I've been having a lot of trouble lately returning low tomahawk serves and I just can't figure out what to do. Any advice?

Hi Evan,

What is happening when you try to receive them?  If the ball is going up, it will be a matter of coming over the ball more. Remember they can't generate as much spin with the tomahawk because of the lack of wrist movement.  Maybe you are playing for too much spin.

Don't try to do too much with the return.  Try to get the ball back effectively into a position that will be advantageous for you.  This could be a short push, a long fast push or a flick.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
