Hello,

I face issue when ball is tossed high up, and later I am not in position to make out if the serve is counter (flat) or chop service.

How to know which one the server used?

Because if I chop the normal flat serve its goes on top and the opponent finish the next ball.

Regards,

Bhushan

Hi Bhushan,

For the flat serve, you need to brush down on the ball.  You can also try to flick this ball.  However recognising the spin is the key.

With the high toss, watch the ball but then particularly watch the contact point.  This is crucial to recognising the type of spin that is on the ball.

Take a look through the lessons in the Receiving Secrets course.  In there we show you the way to recognise spin and also to counteract it.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
