Hi Coach,

I am a very attacking player who like to smash opponents serve. Normally i can smash sidespin serves if it doesnt have heavy backspin however problem is when there is heavy backspin it either goes out or hit in the net.

Please advise how to smash/loop them or should i just push them back somehow on the table?

Thanks

Hi Vipin,

You need to play a topspin stroke on this return.  The backspin will drag the ball into the net an make the smash very low percentage.

Take a look at this previous video response to a similar question, Options Against a Long Backspin Serve.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
