Problem with grip

Strokes

HI Alois

I start out with the standard shake hand grip, but during rallies my grip changes unintentionally.  My index finger turns gradually till it is nearly parallel to the handle. At the same time the middle finger opens up until it is no longer wrapping around the handle.  Apparently I subconsiouly find it more convenient to hit forehand drives by adjusting the grip this way. On back-hand shots the ball sometimes hits my index finger, but I can adjust to hit towards the tip of the bat.

Should I try to grip the bat harder and focus more on maintaining the correct grip even if it feels more awkward?

thanks

Hi Ajoy,

I would keep working on keeping the correct grip.  I think the secret though isn't to grip it tighter.  If you try and grip it tighter it will mean that you hand tightens and will decrease the effectiveness of your grip.

Think more about just keeping the fingers in the right place.  One thing that I have seen work, is to put a piece of card or a coin under the tip of your index finger.  If your grip changes the coin will fall and alert you to the change.  Give this a try.  You could even use a plastic disc or anything that will get your attention on the grip.
