Pro players that need to slow down

Strategy

Out of curiosity, do you think any pro players would do even better by reining in their game? I see so many points lost just barely missing the edge of the table, but it's hard to say whether a softer shot would just invite a heavier counterattack that would cause them to lose the point anyways.

Hi Mark,

I think even the better players could pay a few balls a little slower sometimes with spin to change and upset the rhythm of their opponents.

It is also important to remember that most of their points are won with extreme speed and spin which they would not be able to achieve with a more controlled shot.

Yeah, was kinda thinking that may be the case. However, I so often see players make errors when they try to change the direction of the high-speed counterhit rally, and it flies off the table. I'd think the angle change at that high speed would be enough to get an advantage by itself, but instead they use the same power and it travels the same distance; enough to hit the other side diagonally, but not vertically!

I would disagree, I think that most of the points are won by smart placement foremost and enough power and spin to make the placement effective. Extreme speed is sometimes needed though, only because the person on the other side is smart and fast and can get to the ball if the placement is good, but the ball is a bit slower.
