Hi Alois,

Can you please suggest some drills I can do at home without a table? Footwork, for example. What kind of footwork drills can we do? For how long?

Thank you,

Asha

Hi Asha,

Take a look at our lesson on Practicing Alone.  There are a few good ideas in there.

Lobbing Tactics

If you get pushed back from the table don't just give up the point. Try and and get back into the rally. By lobbing the ball high and deep you give yourself time to get into position. If you can then get some topspin on the ball to force the smasher further away from the table then you are likely to get a weaker smash and then you can take your chance and try to counter attack!

 Hi Alois,

Thank you for sharing the video. I am looking at more advanced drills like footwork, and shadow play. For example, when I practice my forehand topspin, I am not able to balance my body properly, using just my playing arm. As a result, balls that have a good amount of backspin end up in the net due to lack of proper stroke.

I am hoping for drills that will help me correct my posture, and improve my stroke, both forehand and backhand, with proper footwork while playing.

Thank you for your time,

Regards,

Asha

Hi Asha,

It is difficult without a partner or table.  However, practicing the movements without a ball would help.  So do what we call "Shadow Play".  This is the movement and stroke without hitting a ball.  While you are doing this keep focus on the balance in your body and try to play your strokes fully.

Do it in front of a mirror if you can. Your mental representation does not always exactly match your actual stance.
