Playing close to the Table

Strategy

Hello Coaches,

What are the disadvantages of playing close to the Table?

When I think of one, it might be that the elbow region is getting quite vulnerable, cause it's quite big then, and the ball is rarely hit in the optimal highest point of the arc (mostly while rising). Is that the main reason why attacking players go back? Also it's easier to go really low a step back from the Table.

But the argument of having more time, is more of the defensive nature.

Please give some more explanation why attacking players use frequently to step back or maybe they attacking through power and not through speed. They actually slow but powerful and need their time for the powerful swing?

Thanks

Hi Marcin,

It is usually a time issue that forces players back from the table.  This applies to the ball in the middle as well.  If you have more time you can move and play that ball in the middle.

If you are seeing the ball well and can cope with it then staying closer is usually more effective because it cuts down the amount of time your opponent has to make decisions and react.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
