Greetings

I play close to the table returning with either back or forehand strokes which counter the shot with quick topspins or under spin/side spin slices.  I like to play a quick game and end the point on the 3rd or 5th ball. When I play back from the table, I seem to be less aggressive and play more defensible.  My shots are higher and slower over the net which enable my opponent to control.  But I am tall  (6'1") with long arms/legs and slender in built.  Due to my physique would I be better off playing mid-distance from the table rather than playing closer to the table. Do you see taller players playing close to table? The blade I play with is Liu Shiwen with Tenergy 05 rubbers.  I believe this combo is best for close play but I could be wrong.

Hi Duane,

I think it is Ok to develop your close to the table game even though you are tall.

Take a look at Vladimir Samsonov and see how he plays.  He would be a good player to model your game on.

The bat seems good as well.

Hey Duane,

I'm about an inch shorter than you but love playing closer to the table in single matches. I am more comfortable playing back in doubles. You go with your strength and that is closer to the table rather than your physical dimensions. Playing back is only a secondary option. Playing closer has its advantages, you can cut off the angles quicker and make stronger shots. Playing back requires more table coverage along with footwork and opens the door for more wider angles against you. I only like playing back to mix things up once in a while and I like playing back a bit while playing doubles.

So from one tall dude to another, stay close! :)
