Playing against short chops

Strategy

Hi Alois,

I played handicap games with a male div 1 player from our tta, and I had great difficulty with his short chops (he is a penhold player). What would be the best strategy against him, as I can't score by chopping back to him.

Thanks,

Chau

Hi Chau,

The best strategy for that match would be to vary your pushes between short and long.  You could also serve more balls long to open up the game and see if your open game was better than his.

In the long term think about improving your short play because this is important for becoming a higher level player.

Tactics Against A Defensive Chopper

A chopper likes to get back from the table and get into a nice rhythm. If you keep the defender close to the table in the early part of the rally, it's hard for them to transition back into their chopping position. So keep the ball short on your serve and try and catch them unprepared. Watch the video to find out more great tactics to use against a defensive chopper.
