Playing Against Long Pips

Strategy

Hi Pingskills,

When playing long pimples, when you return their serve would it be no spin since it's pips so I can just attack? I know the drive and push concept but I don't understand if I hit a topspin ball I could get a float or backpsin short. What should I do? Push or attack? This is the most confusing bit?

Hi Nathan,

When you're playing against long pimples, the key is this: long pimples mostly reflect and reverse spin, not create their own. So the spin on the ball you get back depends on what spin you put in.

Here’s how it works, and how you should respond:

1. You serve with topspin

  • The long pimples reverse this, so you get backspin back.

  • That means: Don’t try to attack this return like it’s a topspin ball. It will go into the net.

  • Best response: Push it back or topspin it with proper lifting technique.

2. You push with backspin

  • They return topspin or float, depending on their contact.

  • If it's float/light topspin, you can attack. But don’t overhit — treat it like a slower ball with slight topspin.

  • Best response: Open up with a topspin, but with control. Think brush rather than drive.

3. They block your topspin loop with long pimples

  • That return is usually dead or backspin, depending on their contact.

  • That’s why sometimes your second attack goes into the net, you treated it like it still had topspin.

  • Best response: Lift it again carefully with spin, not force. Don’t drive through it unless it's high and loose.

The confusing bit:

There’s no fixed rule whether to push or attack. It depends on:

  • Height of the ball

  • Depth

  • Spin on the return (read it from your own previous stroke)

  • Your confidence and skill

If the ball is low and has backspin → push
If the ball is higher or floaty → topspin attack or controlled loop

The most important thing: Always remember what spin you gave them, and expect the opposite from long pimples. That unlocks everything.
