Strategy
Hi PingSkills,
Recently, I played with an opponent holding pimple rubber on backhand. When I returned the ball which was hit by backhand (pimple), the ball flew over the place (went to net / flew out the table etc).
Could you please explain how to play with an opponent using pimple rubber.
Thank you.
Nam
Hi Nam,
If it is long pimple rubber then the pimple is reversing the spin on the ball. If you play with topspin to their backhand and they return it, the ball will have some backspin on it. If you hit the ball with backspin and they return it, the ball will have topspin.
Take a look at the lesson on the Effects of Rubbers for some more help with this. We also have a lesson in our Match Strategy Course for our Premium members on Playing Against Long Pimples. When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
