Serving

Hello I'm having trouble with the pendulum server its when i snap my wrist it either doesn't spin at all or i hit it so hard.

Is it because my bat does not have enough spin(it's a Butterfly Addoy) or am I doing it wrong.

I can get the pendulum to work sometimes but it doesnt bounce very fast or it is very high Because Alois ones are very low and bounce quite fast with so much spin Help please

Thanks, Raymond

Hi Raymond,

The Pendulum serve can be difficult but the main thing is lots of repetitive practice.  It sounds like you are getting a flat contact on the ball instead of a brushing contact.  This will stop the ball the ball from going too long and fast.  The bat needs to travel fast but with the brushing contact the ball will then travel quite slowly.

I could give you a lot of technical advice about getting the serve lower but first try putting a string across the net like in the Lesson on Keeping The Ball Low.  I am sure this will improve the height of your serve.

The Butterf;y Addoy will allow you to generate good enough spin to be able to do the serve well as long as it is in good condition.

When I serve pendulum short backspin, I like to keep my swing and bat angle completely horizontal. This means the ball will bounce upward off the bat so a low contact point is crucial, usually below net height, to keep the ball low. Try the serve with a stationery bat at first, to get a feel for what height contact point you need. Then gradually add arm, elbow and wrist movement to generate spin. The speed should not change much if you keep the same action. After that, altering the bat angle slightly will allow slightly longer and faster serves with similar spin.

Hope this is helpful.
