Hi Alois and Jeff,

I was having a look through the questions and answers recently, and there was a discussion about the Par Gerrell serve. This serve is one I have been learning over the past few weeks, but I cant find any other reference to it other than on here. I have watched Gerrell do the serve many times, and have also watched Gavin Rumgay do it, but I am struggling to see where the variation comes from. I understand that the bat needs to be tilted back for backspin, and forward for topspin, but does this not make the serve easy to pick? Also, because of the angle of the bat and the way you contact the ball, the ball will naturally go across the table, it is hard to put the ball down the line. Is this possible? If so, can you try and explain how its done?

 Many thanks

Hi Simon,

It can be difficult to disguise this serve.  However it doesn't take much of a variation on your angle to be able to get different spin on the ball.  It is also effective because many players don't see the serve often.

To get the ball down the line doesn't take much change in the action.  Just get the nose of the bat moving more to the direction you want it to go.

I think with this serve it is impotant to experiment with it, because there is not much information about it on the web. i have been using this serve for a long time now and at the moment it is one of my best serves. There are many slightly different ways to do the serve and so many angles u can hit the ball with so just try different things out. The other thing is to make the follow throught the same for both topspin and backspin. so straight after contact u should have the same finish for topspin and backspin.

Hope this helps
