Moving to Cover the Angles

Strokes

After every shot should i recover to a neutral position. On greg letts site there is an article about covering angles and i believe u have a video like this on youtube. So for example if i hit a forehand down the line should i shuffle to my left to cover the wide angle. The thing that i am worried about is that when i do this i will go back to a problem i had before from playing tennis where i played with little strength and was jumping about or dancing between shots. Thanks

Hi Thomas,

The principle of covering the angles is correct.  You will find you will start to do this quite naturally after a while.

You need to work more on your movement.  Footwork and movement needs to be balanced and without bouncing.  Most of the movements in Table Tennis are sideways.  You should try to keep your eyes level when moving.  This will eliminate the jumping around.

By staying low and on the ground, your power will also increase.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.

Would one way of practicing this be doing forehands down the line and after each shot shuffle to my left and shuffle back into position?

Hi Thomas,

You could also shuffle and hit a ball from the middle position before moving back for the other forehand hit.
