Hi Alois, recently helshan weeresinghe beat liam pitchford and in an interview weeresinghe said i played the ball not the player could you describe what this means?

Hi Tam,

He is talking about his focus during the match.

It is really important during a match to focus on the ball above all else.  It is easy to go out and think too much about other things surrounding the match.  In this case about how much higher Pitchford is ranked and his chances of winning the match.

You do need to consider the opponent in so far as you need to examine who you are playing and the tactics that you will need to employ but then in each rlly your focus needs to be on the ball.  Sometimes this plays out as you missing an easy shot against a better opponent because you are trying too hard and thinking you have to play a better shot than you really need to.
