Hi Martin,

I just finished watch him play Xu Xin in the semi final of the World Cup.  He uses a normal Pendulum serve.  Against Xu Xin he did a lot of short topspin serves.

We cover the Pendulum serve fully in our Course on Serving Secrets.  The basics of the Pendulum serve are covered in quite a few previous question.  To get a lot of information put in 'Pendulum Serve into the search box at eh top of the Ask the Coach page.  You will find a lot of questions there that will give you a whole heap of information.

You will notice that he has his left leg close to the backhand corner of the table and his right leg much further back.  He then spins around into the ready position quickly as he serves.

Returning his serve is another matter.  If he serves with backspin then you would try to return it short but it comes at you very fast.  For the topspin serves you want to flick the ball but he is ready to counter your flick.  That is why he is such a strong player.
