Equipment
Hi coach,
I'm a shakehand user while my partner is a pen grip holder with a long pip rubber. From my understanding is that long pip rubber cannot generate a lot of spin when service. Is there a way or method to create spin with long pip rubber?
Another question is, does the long pip rubber remove spin when contact on the ball? I'm a bit confused.
Hi John,
It is difficult to create much spin with the long pips. Some one pips have a bit of friction on the surface but still you can't really grip the ball with them very well.
The long pips does reverse the spin rather than removing it.
So if you put a lot of backspin on the ball it will come back to you with topspin and vice versa.
The more spin you put on the ball and send to the long pips the more spin you will get back.
There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!

So if i'm playing doubles, if my partner serves the ball with the long pip rubber, does that make me at a disadvantage? Since the ball does not have much spin, my opponent can easily attack the ball...

If long pips can't generate much spin, why do people use it to serve? They will be at a disadvantage then. Though there spin will get reversed; oponnent can easily utilize this weakness.....
They are used as a serve variation which can often trick their opponents.

Most long pips players serve with their forehand inverted rubber most of the time
