Learning different grips

Strokes

Do you find it an advantage, a disadvantage, or neither, to learn how different grips ie. penhold, shakehand affect the ball?  Do players know how to play both styles or do they pick one and stick with it?  I struggle against people who play pengrip, because I'm mystified by the exaggerated actions.

Hi RJ,

It is best for a player to find one grip that suits them and stay with it.

As far as playing against players with different grips there are a few subtle variations thinking about in general what is more difficult and easier for players with different grips.

What are the actions of a penholder that you find difficult to deal with?

The few penholders I have played against have very dramatic arm movements, not like the penholders you see in pro tournaments.  I follow the ball, but the arms are just so exaggerated that I lose focus for just one second and boom... I'm either hitting into the net, or driving it long...

OK.  Try to focus only on the ball.  This will give you the best chance of seeing what is happening.  Then it doesn't matter what they are doing with their bat and arm you will still be able to track the ball.
