I am a Japanese penhold player. I was wondering how do I attack a short or medium distance underspin ball to my backhand side.

Hi Noah,

The main thing is to hit the ball from outside your left hip.  The start low and finish high and brush the ball on contact.

Take a look at this tutorial that will help. https://youtu.be/iUK7-z7Zv3Y?t=8m4s

Also take a look at the shakehand version as the principles are very similar just that you need to hit the ball from a little further outside the left hip. Backhand Topspin Off Backspin
