Some of my co-players are telling me that weight-lifting is not advisable to a table tennis player. Some coaches also told me that even playing basketball or some sports that require a bit more of force in the arm will affect your control. But I am wondering why the chinese players includes these weight-lifting in their training. Is it okay if I make some weight-lifting after a multiball-training? Thanks!

Hi Jun-Jun,

Weight lifting and training is a good idea if you want to get better.  That is why the best players in the world utilise it.  You should maintain what you are doing.

Perhaps what you could do is seek advice form a professional at a gym that will help you to tailor your training to be more specific for what you want.

I have a similar question. I am used to go swimming every week two times for many years and am wondering whether it is OK with my table tennis or rather bad? It certainly helps with my cardio system but the muscles involved are really different and also not much elasticity involved.

Any exercise like that will be ok for you, even if it doesn't directly benefit your game it is still good for your general health.

If I may, the only thing that should probably be avoided is pure bodybuilding. When I see guys who look like they have to shift sideways through doors because they cannot bring their arms down enough anymore, that would probably be an issue for playing table tennis. Your muscles must not restrict your movements.

Maybe playing another racquet game could not be a great idea either? Like tennis, where you need more force but you may lose the fine touch required to feel the feather-light table tennis ball?

I think Tennis is OK as your brain adjusts quickly enough.  It may take the first few minutes to adjust but after that you will be OK.  The more you play the sport the quicker the adjustment will be.  I think there are a lot of benefits from playing another racket sport as well, such as using different patterns and strategies as well as muscles.

Pure body building is not good? AWWWW . I am doing my footwork-trainings at home. Then I decided to do some body-building workouts after these footwork-trainings. I am doing weightlifting not to have power but to have a good body. I am trying to have a good form on my body. So this not good then?

Weight training is good for you.  I think what Jean was talking about is body building which focuses more on the look rather than the performance of the muscles.

Keep up the weight training Jun-Jun.

Yes, I was talking about extreme body-building, like this:

With all the respect due to the fact that this guy could crush my skull between his two little fingers, I can't imagine he could be very good at fast top-spinning...

Otherwise, fitness is certainly good for you.

J-B.
