I would like to know how important is the role of mastering top spin shots / service returns in modern table tennis. Also, suggest some effective coaching videos for skill development.

Hi Ashoke,
Topspin is a key to being able to generate more speed on your strokes whether it is in the rally or on the return of serve.
Without topspin you are giving yourself less margin for error over the net and onto the table with all of your shots.
Work on developing the topspin even with your initial forehand and backhand strokes which will then merge into your faster topspin strokes.

Forehand Topspin Variations
A great weapon is being able to vary the amount of speed and spin on your forehand topspin stroke. By making your stroke more vertical and brushing the ball finely, you can generate more spin. For more speed you need to swing more horizontally.
