Hi William,

You have picked a great player to watch and copy.  Hugo Calderano has excellent technique.

The serve he uses a lot is the High Toss Pendulum serve.  The basic principle is to throw the ball high to get the ball to be moving faster when it hits your racket.  Then you execute the Pendulum serve as you normally would by brushing the side of the ball.  One of the difficult parts initially is throwing the ball up straight so that it comes down in a god position to make the serve from.

Take a look at what is available in the High Toss Serve video which is a Premium video but worth getting access to.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
