 Hi Alois,

I have a problem with a kid in my class that does a high ball with a lot of back or underspin and lots of sidespin, and whenever I want to smash it the ball goes to the net  or out it always curves it's a bit to hard and can you also do forehand topspin or smash it? Please help.

Hi Abbas,

This can be a difficult ball for a lot of players to start with.  You should still lift the ball a little even if it is high because of the backspin that is on the ball.  Also make sure you get into ta good balanced position to hit the smash.  A lot of players will reach out for it because of the backspin and this also causes the ball to go into the net.

In our city's club that I have mentioned before-where every player is focused on one style-there is a player who focuses on training to use such balls-a lot of various spin, close to the back line and varying in height, played from the floor level

Alois,

What do you mean with "lifting the ball"?

I assume you have open your racket a bit to counter the backspin but do you also imply that you should have a slightly upward swing (ending above eye level) or can you apply a downward swing with open racket (ending at neck level)?

Hi Ard,

Yes a lifting action will go from low to high and brush the ball on contact with some topspin.  Try to end above eye level.
