Hi jeff,

nice to know u,i have a basic question about service return.  i was play table tennis since i was Senior High School, and still have this little problem.  When i was play with my opponent i still confuse about how to return side service from him. Could u explain to me, i must chop or just block it.  The opponent served the ball swing it from right to left side (how to return it) and swing from left to right side (how to return it)

Could u send me link video about this answer.

thanks a lot

Regards

Hary

Hi Hary,

Returning sidespin is easier once you get the idea of the angle of your racket.

If the ball is swinging to your left then it will spin off your bat to the right.  So you need to angle your bat to the left to counteract the spin.  You do the opposite if the ball is swinging the other way.

Returning Short Topspin Serves: Two Options

Returning a short topspin serve can be tricky because the spin wants to lift the ball up. In this video, we look at two effective options: developing an attacking flick and learning how to push the ball safely.

For the flick, the key is to be positive. Take a few risks, hit through the ball a little harder, and aim for a fast, flat contact. In practice, don’t worry too much about making mistakes as this is how you learn to control the shot under pressure.

The second option is the push. You can push a short topspin serve, but you need to adjust your contact. Instead of getting under the ball, come down the back of it more, almost feeling like your bat is moving slightly backwards. This helps counter the topspin and keeps the return lower and more controlled.
