How to play a pusher

Strategy

I have played with a player who is an extremely consistent pusher(forehand only). He effectively pushes all the balls back irrespective of the spin, only with his forehand. He takes points by the opponent's unforced errors.  Since the balls are coming back low and under spinning, it is very difficult to top spin them.  What sort of a strategy can work against such players?

thank you

Hi Rana,

If they only push on the forehand, then you can serve faster to them so that you know what type of ball you are getting back.  You can also tell more easily the direction the ball is going to come back.

The key then is to be ready to make a topspin stroke on the next ball.

This strategy makes it more difficult for them to position the ball awkwardly for you and allows you to dictate the play.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.

thanks Alois. at our level off play, a rally lasts for more than the international average. I was looking for something to apply mid-rally, especially when I cannot play a third ball top spin and the game goes into the usual push-push routine.

thanks in advance

Hi Rana,

Looks for the best opportunity to make a topspin.  If the ball is a little higher or in an easier position that is the time to make an attacking stroke.

Hai Alois,

Does that mean that I will have to wait for my opponent to make an error of giving me a high ball (which is something that I come across only rarely) to win a point? That solves it then.

Thank you
