Hi Coach

Yesterday I was playing table tennis with some elder player. He was around 40+. I was winning, the score was game eight. And it was his chance to serve. Till now he was using long sidespin, backspin serves which I used to topspin it on my FH or BH. But suddenly he gave me short heavy sidespin on my BH first and then FH. I tried to push it but it was so heavy sidespin that it goes out every time. And I lose the game (deuce). How to pick short Heavy Sidespin serve.

Hi Tushar,

You need to have a relaxed hand and then change the angle of you racket to allow for the sidespin.  As far as picking when it is coming, just watch the ball carefully and it will give you all the information you need.

Fake Movements

After the ball has left the server's bat, they can no longer affect the spin that is on the ball. Any movements after the contact are referred to as fake movements and are meant to confuse you as the receiver. You need to focus on the contact to read the spin.
