Training
A big thanks to you to teach me top spin, smash and push shots. My confusion is in the game how to select the right shot quickly and play it in the right manner. If you can direct me to the video for such that would be helpful.
Hi,
Thanks for your kind words. Glad to hear the lessons on topspin, smash and push have been helpful for you.
The question of shot selection during a match is a really important one, and it’s something all players continue to develop over time. It comes down to recognising the cues from your opponent—like the speed, spin and placement of their shot—and having the right habits so you can respond without overthinking.
A good place to start is our video Reading Spin, which helps you understand what’s coming at you. We also have a lesson on Developing Tactics that talks about making good decisions based on your strengths and your opponent’s weaknesses.
In terms of training this, I’d suggest doing regular match practice with a focus on reacting and choosing the right stroke, not just playing pre set drills. Over time, as your technique becomes more automatic, your shot selection will feel more natural and instinctive.
Let me know how you get on with those videos and feel free to ask more questions as they come up.
Question actions
Most drills involve one person performing the exercise and the other placing the ball as required by the exercise. We call this person placing the ball the controller. When you are acting as the controller it is a great opportunity to practice your blocking and concentration. As blocking is an important part of the game you should be 100% focused at this time. You also owe it to your training partner to be blocking effectively so they get the most from their exercise.
