How does a penholder defend

Hey, i'm just wondering, how does a penholder play a role as a defender? Because i don't see much defending from a penholder. Thanks.

Hi Antonius,

There are not many penhold defenders because the backhand chop is more difficult with the penhold.  You also don’t get as much reach with the penhold which is a key part of being able to reach balls when back from the table.

Hi, 

The penholders don't choose defending as their key strategy in a game, however, Ma Lin is sometimes seen to defend far back from the table with various lobs.
