Helping a new person

Strokes

I just started taking table tennis seriously and playing competitively, and I wanted to help my Dad out.  He has been using a 10$ thin foam paddle that is really bad quality and is not used to closing his paddle, he always hits open, He got a 20$ premade paddle with 2.0mm sponge and it has been hard for him to adjust.  He keeps on thinking about hitting the ball open but as he is hitting the ball he is moving his wrist over the ball too much and closing it too much.  So he starts to hit the ball open and then basically goes over the ball.  Are there any exercises on getting him to just brush the ball, I remember I saw one where you put the ball on a waterbottle lid and you try to brush it on the other side without touching the waterbottle

Thanks

Hi Bennett,

I think the best thing is to follow the basics of the forehand stroke.  If he gets the start and finish position right, he will naturally start to brush the ball appropriately.
