Receiving
Hello Coach,
Thank you for your reply email about wearing wrist weights during practice Ping-Pong. I have another question.
I have problem to return short spin serve especially on my forehand. Usually when I return, the ball goes everywhere out of the Ping-Pong table. How can I practice to return short spin serve for my forehand and backhand. Do you know any common ways to return sidespin serve?
Hi Hai,
Returning spin is about firstly watching the contact of your opponent and then learning the angles you need to put your bat on to counter that spin.
We have a series on Receiving Secrets where we show you how to return serves that have tricky spins on them.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
