When I grip the paddle, my thumb always seems to end up extended up onto the rubber and my index finger does the same. Is this going to be determental in any way?

Hi Jim,

When your thumb or index finger move up it tends to tighten your wrist.  This in turn will mean less movement of the wrist and therefore less spin and speed.

Focus your attention on this for a while and see if you can change the habit.
