Strokes
Hi, I'm a very average table tennis player, and I feel that it is time for me to move up my gameplay.
I started training forehand topspin strokes a while ago, and I'm totally struggling with it. I do get the stroke sometimes, but I can't even tell if that was topspinned or not, and it could be an absolute fluke for me to get the stroke right.
How can I get more consistent with my forehand topspin and avoid making mistakes? What are some mistakes I could be making?
Hi Yuuki,
Firstly it is great that you have decided to make a step up in your game.
The forehand topspin is an important part of the game and well worth putting time into.
Focus on the finish position of your stroke. Keep it as simple as you can making sure you are moving your bat through one plane and not changing the direction of the bat. It does take time to get right because there may be subtle changes to the amount of spin on the ball.
Chop blocks can be deceptive and frustrating — but with the right technique, you can take control.

✔ How chop blocks differ from standard blocks
✔ Why timing is crucial when countering
✔ How to adjust your stroke to lift and loop effectively
