Hi Alois

I am a pretty good player but i don't return serves with my forehand very good , and i saw that when professional players are getting the serve to their forehand area than they often turn and return it with their backhand.

I'm not a very very quick player but i have a good backhand, so should i start practicing returning serves that come to my forehand with my backhand or should i need to practice more the forehand return?

Hi David,

I would give the backhand return a try if that is what you feel most comfortable with.

Take a look at our lesson on the Backhand Sidespin Flick.  One key element is that once you have made the stroke you will need to recover quickly into your ready position.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
