i have noticed that most beginner's attempt to apply too spin and their finish is really low. It's like they curl over the top of the ball and finish in a downward swoop. How does someone help them learn to finish forward and higher?

Hi Cam,

Really focus on the finish.  Get them to stop at the end of their stroke and check where it is.

Start with some slow strokes totally focusing on the finish position.

Yes you can generate better topspin by finishing higher.

And is it bad when I make a downward swoop?

For me,it is the only option how to avoid the ball flying far behind the table.
