Eye on the ball

Strokes

Hi Alois,

I am a NZ "C"/"B" grade club player. I often end up having the ball hitting my fingers or the edge of the bat. I think it's because I don't keep my eye on the ball up the point of hitting it. What is your advise for how long you keep your eye on the ball for, and does it vary for different strokes?

Hi Rob,

I think you are right that watching the ball is probably the issue.

I always say, watch the ball as long as you can.  You will find that you will tend to stop tracking it when it gets to within 15cm of your bat but the principle remains the same.

You can use little tricks like putting markings on the ball when you are training to keep your attention on the ball.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
