Serving
Hello.
I was wondering, what is the effectiveness of the backspin Pendulum serve? Does backspin in general cause the ball to go into the net?
The effects of sidespin serves are clear, but it looks like backspin servers are easier to return.
Thoughts?
Hi Christian,
The backspin is really important to make it more difficult for your opponent to attack the serve. Because it drags the ball downwards, your opponent needs to lift the ball rather than attack forward on it.
Serving in table tennis is about much more than just getting the ball into play; it's about setting the pace, controlling the game, and exploiting your opponent's weaknesses from the very first touch. In This Video, You'll Discover:

Ah ok, so can it be more effective than a Sidespin serve?
What is more effective really depends on how well you can serve each type of serve and how well your opponent can return each type of serve. What might work really well against one opponent, might not be so effective against another. It's important to remember what each of your opponent does and doesn't like which is why we encourage you to use the PingSkills Vault.
