PingSkills has made a DVD on this topic that will enable you to improve your serve immensely.  Take a look at out Online Store for "Serving Secrets Revealed". 

The basics are that you need to brush the ball on contact and once you have mastered that you need to then brush the ball faster to generate more spin.

Firstly start by trying to get the ball to spin while you are away from the table.  See if you can make the ball come back to you on the floor by brushing the ball on contact.
