Hi,

Start by focusing on brushing under the ball.  This will get the ball spinning backwards with backspin.  Once you understand this contact you will be able to learn a lot of backspin serves.

Hi Alois

I noticed that when you do the backspin , the action looks like you are not putting a lot of backspin , yet the ball stops and comes back slightly.

When I do the backspin serve , the ball skids through. I would like to how to get the ball to stop , just to have another variation

to my serves and making the serve as short as possible.

Thanks

Regards

Grenville

One thing is to slow the ball down.  This will help the ball to stop.  Also contacting the ball finer and more at the base will help.

When I do the backspin, I brush it diagonally (between the base and the back) but I can't seem to hit it far enough; it moves very lightly and goes on my side. I think I'm not making enough brushing contact, but I don't know how to make enough brushing contact. So can you help me with this?

Try to brush the ball more at the bottom rather than between the back and base.

Hey Alois,

I think I get enough brushing on the ball, but I can't seem to get the ball to come back after it bounces the second time on the other side. Although if I try to do the same in a free space, without the table, it does. I see in the video that you are not even trying to do too much with the ball and yet it stops and comes back. Does the difference in the quality of bats can be a factor? I am using the PingSkills Rook at the moment.

Hi Abhinav,

The PingSkills Rook will allow you to get enough backspin.

Try tilting your bat even further back so it feels like it is facing behind you.  It doesn’t require much effort at all, it is all about getting the angle right.  Often when we swing through to hit the ball the angle of the bat changes to becoming more vertical.  See if you can even film yourself doing it so that you can check this.

Hey Alois, I just have two last questions to ask about the backspin serve. How should I tilt my wrist when doing the backspin serve and how should I follow through?

You need to turn your whole forearm backwards and keep you wrist relaxed. The relaxed wrist will allow your wrist to swing back and forward freely.

What do you mean turn your whole arm backwards?

And Alois, how should I follow through?

Should I follow through with my backspin serve? If yes, then how should I do it?

Oh. Now I see what you mean.

Here's another one of your great comments that keep it simple and do away with popular myth. There's really no way to hit the ball twice in any legal fashion, so coming through in a curved line doesn't make any sense. Still there are coaches who suggest that you should move the bat up at the end of the stroke to generate extra backspin, whatever that may mean.

Straight lines, I like it!
