Different sponge thickness forehand - backhand

Hi Alois and Jeff,

What is the reason that so many players use a thinner sponge on their backhand than on their forehand side?

To me as a beginner who wants to develop forehand and backhand equally, this wouldn´t make sense, right?

Greetings from Germany

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

A lot of players have a stronger forehand than backhand.  The thicker sponge on the forehand allows them to generate more speed and spin whereas the thinner sponge on the backhand helps them to control the ball better.

When you are learning you should have the same on both sides to develop your strokes.
